We are very excited to announce that Beyond Productions (producers of "MythBusters") and the Discovery Channel are launching a new reality television series called "Prototype This!"

Prototype This! is looking for at least two hosts for the new show, and you could be one of them!

Prototype This! will be holding a Casting Call at the TechShop facilities in Menlo Park the week of September 25, 2006!

Below is the Casting Call notice that Beyond Productions has asked us to pass on.

Please do not contact TechShop about the Casting Call. You should contact Colette Sandstedt directly by email at colettesand@gmail.com to be considered for the call.

Good luck!
Subject: Casting crack builders/electronics wizards for Discovery show

Hey guys,

I am currently searching for people to host a new science show called
"Prototype This" for the Discovery Channel. The show will bring
together a team of young scientists and builders who will combine
their skills and ideas to dream up, design and manufacture
technological inventions which meet some kind of everyday need or
want. The inventions could be in any field - home, work, leisure,
sport etc. The only limit is our imagination, skill set and
enthusiasm.

I'm emailing you because you have idealab/Burning Man/ILM/freaky
science/effects/weird artist/genius/T.E.D./Siggraph/Vulcan
connections. I'm also contacting universities, museums, and
organizations that combine science and art.

We're looking for at least 2 people; ideally:

1. An electronics wizard, hopefully with some building skills. Women
very welcome.
2. A crack builder. Again, women very welcome.

Or some combo thereof.

As a group, our hosts will have a wide and deep range of skills and
smarts, from robotics through mechanical engineering to electronics.
Some may have recently completed PhDs or Masters; others may have
never been near college but are brilliant and creative model makers or
builders. All candidates need to know their way around a workshop and
be able to bring more than just blue-sky thinking to the table. We
want tinkerers - people who love to build crazy stuff for the hell of
it.

The show will be very "hands on" - the entertainment will be in
watching our team battle with the problems inherent in fast-track
prototyping and overcome them to at least achieve a proof of concept
by the end of the episode. And seeing if the thing actually works.

If you think you might fit the bill or know anyone who does, please
contact me. We're looking at doing a casting session on September 25,
so time is short. Any and all ideas welcome!

Thanks,
Colette Sandstedt

ScotchBrite pads for grinders work pretty well. If you can find them. The overlapping abrasive flaps only go down to about 120 grit, I think; that's not good enough for a mirror finish.
I knew a guy that'd use various cloth wheels, etc on a right angle die grinder. Using a steadilly finer grade of pumice to rouge to polish - he could make a piece of scrap metal look like you'd had it chromed.
I think Klingspor sells those pads. 1-800-645-5555 or email their sales dept at sales@klingspor.com.

I just perused their retail site, but it's mostly woodworking stuff. It may be better to talk with a human there.
Re: Steel polishing...

Ok first I would put on some old fugazi then,

-50 grit sanding disk to flatten your welds and irregularities
-120 grit in a continuously light-handed, crosshatching pattern to even the surface.
-60-120 grit D.A. to remove any surface blemishes before polishing
-Brown pad (scotch bright style) in a circular motion to remove the 120 scratches
-Red pad (" ) to take out brown scratches
-Blue pad (") to take out red scratches
You are now at about a 400grit polish, to go further you should use a cloth wheel and the appropriate series of polishes (an applied aggregate paste).
This in not a quick process and if your surface area is proportionate to you, you should use a 7" grinder to insure efficiency.
In this process I did not include the physical approach of the grinding for it is a practiced art that takes one on one instruction.
Abrasives can be bought at any welding store but search online for the best deal. You can get specs from McMaster carr.

Hope that helped,

I wouldn ’t comment unless I had something to add.

After you have brought the surface down to 400+ grit, use steel wool instead of scotch bright.

Steel wool is a lot more uniform than the Brillo pads. Under a microscope Steel wool leaves scratches that are closer together and the same depth. Brillo pads leave irregular scratches. Once I ’m done with sanding I switch to three or four OT steel wool after that I go to polish.
an additional 2 cents......

Unless of course you are pollishing stainless or any other non ferrous material, steel wool will impregnate itself into the material and eventualy it will rust.
Re: Steel polishing...

steel will eventually go to a solid mirror polish, there are a lot of ways of getting there, another way of doing it is with normal sandpaper, wet(with a oil they use for honing blades.)

one of the advantages of using blocks with 400,600,800,1000,2000 is the part can be really flat.

If i was sanding steel, usually 400 is where i would stop and then begin scotch brites and then polish...

also don't be afraid of doing it by hand sometimes it will get better results.
